No family doctor? Here’s what to do in NL
You’re not alone — roughly 1 in 4 people in Newfoundland and Labrador don’t have a family doctor or nurse practitioner. Not having one doesn’t leave you without options, and it does not stop you from getting mental-health support.
For mental health, you don’t need a doctor at all
Many people wait on getting help because they think they need a referral first. For mental health and addictions, you don’t: these are free, and open to you right now.
- Doorways — free, same-day, single-session counselling. No referral, no waitlist.
- 811 (HealthLine) — free, 24/7 nurses who can talk through a mental-health or addictions concern.
- Get Help Now — crisis lines and same-day options, listed by urgency.
Everyday health, right now
Start with a pharmacist
This is the most under-used option. In NL, pharmacists can assess and prescribe for more than 30 common conditions — UTIs, pink eye, cold sores, shingles, heartburn, contraception, help to quit smoking, and more — and can renew many prescriptions for up to 12 months. It’s free with an active MCP card, usually with no appointment. Just walk into any pharmacy. Pharmacy services (gov.nl.ca)
Call 811 for advice
Free, 24/7, staffed by registered nurses. Not sure whether something needs to be seen, or where to go? 811 will tell you. About 811
Walk-in clinics & emergencies
For something a pharmacist can’t handle, a walk-in clinic can help. For anything life-threatening — chest pain, trouble breathing, a mental-health emergency — call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
While you wait for a family doctor
1. Register with Patient Connect NL
This is the provincial waitlist to be matched with a family doctor, nurse practitioner, or Family Care Team. Register online, or call 1-833-913-4679. You can register even without an MCP card, and registering is also what makes you eligible for free virtual care below. Register with Patient Connect NL
2. Use free provincial virtual care
Once you’re on Patient Connect NL, you’ll be mailed instructions to use Virtual Care NL — free appointments with family physicians and nurse practitioners licensed in NL, by phone, app, or computer, weekdays 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Using it does not cost you your place on the waitlist. About Virtual Care NL
If you take mental-health medication
Losing a doctor can put a prescription at risk. A pharmacist can renew many medications for up to 12 months — ask yours whether yours qualifies (some, including certain controlled medications, can’t be extended this way). Virtual Care NL can also help. Please don’t stop a mental-health medication suddenly; a pharmacist, 811, or a virtual-care provider can help you bridge a gap safely.
