What to expect when you call 811

811 (the NL HealthLine) is free, confidential, and answered around the clock by registered nurses. It's the main front door for a mental health or addictions concern in Newfoundland and Labrador that isn't a life-threatening emergency. You don't need a referral, a health-card crisis, or the 'right' words — they talk to people about exactly this every day.

Step by step

  1. 1

    You dial 811

If 811 won't connect (some VoIP or out-of-province phones), use 1-888-709-2929. You may wait briefly during busy times — the line is staffed 24/7.

  2. 2

    A nurse answers

A registered nurse, trained in crisis and health navigation, picks up. You can stay anonymous. Tell them in your own words what's going on — you don't need to have it figured out.

  3. 3

They listen and ask a few questions

They'll ask what you're experiencing and how urgent it is, to understand how best to help. There are no wrong answers.

  4. 4

They point you to the right next step

Depending on what you need, that might be coping strategies for tonight, a warm handoff to a crisis team, advice on whether to go to an emergency room, or which local service to contact next.

They’ll ask

  • What's been going on for you, in your own words
  • Whether you or someone else is safe right now
  • Roughly where in the province you are (so they can point you to local help)

They won’t

  • Judge you, or require you to be 'bad enough' to call
  • Make you give your name if you don't want to
  • Share what you say with anyone outside the help you ask for
