Introduction: Mental Health & Wellness

What mental health actually means, and why everyone has some, not just people in crisis.

What it is

Mental health isn't a binary — it's not something you either “have” or “don't have.” Everyone has mental health, the same way everyone has physical health, and it moves along a spectrum from thriving to struggling depending on what's happening in someone's life, body, and circumstances at any given time.

Good to know

Good mental health doesn't mean the absence of difficult emotions — anger, sadness, and anxiety are normal, healthy parts of being human. The goal isn't to never feel them; it's to have enough support and skills that they don't take over.

What helps

The basics matter more than people expect: sleep, movement, connection with other people, and a sense of purpose all genuinely shift where someone sits on that spectrum. None of that replaces professional support when it's needed, but it's the foundation everything else builds on.

When to seek help

There's no minimum severity required to ask for support — checking in with a counsellor or your doctor about how you're doing is reasonable at any point, not just in a crisis.
